Learning from History: The Abolition of Slavery

Learning from History: International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

Hello, young explorers! Today, we're going to learn about a special day called the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. It is one of a number of Festivals that aims to remind us that this dark force is still prevalent in the world today and we're going to learn about its history, how we stopped it and what we can do to continue to fight it around the world.

What is the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition?

Long ago, there was a time when some people were treated unfairly and forced to work very hard without being paid. This was called slavery. The slave trade was a sad and difficult time in history when many people were taken from their homes in Africa to work in other places, like the Americas. On August 23rd, we remember the people who suffered during this time and honor those who fought to end slavery. This day helps us learn about the importance of treating everyone with kindness, fairness, and respect.

All across London, there are festivals and remembrance services to mark this day, its dark history and ultimate salvation when slavery was abolished. Sign up for updates at the Royal Museum's Greenwich's National Maritime Museum, where, in 2023, marked the history of Greenwich docks and its role in the transatlantic slave trade. The event is also marked by the London Mayor's Office, Unite the Union

What Can We Learn from It?

Respect for Everyone: It's important to treat everyone with respect and kindness, no matter where they come from or what they look like. We should always be fair and help others when they need it.

Standing Up for What's Right: We can learn from the brave people who stood up against slavery and worked hard to make sure everyone is treated fairly. Even if something seems difficult, we should always try to do what's right and help others who may need our help.

Learning from History: History teaches us many things about how people lived in the past and how they worked together to make the world a better place. By learning about history, we can understand why it's important to be kind and fair to everyone around us.

Celebrating Diversity: We should celebrate our differences and learn from each other's cultures and backgrounds. Just like how different colors make a beautiful rainbow, our differences make our world a more interesting and wonderful place.

What Can We Do?

Be Kind: Always be kind to your friends, teachers, and everyone you meet. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's day.

Learn About Different Cultures: Ask your teachers and parents about different cultures and traditions. Understanding each other helps us build strong friendships and communities.

Read and Learn: Read books and stories about different people and places around the world. This helps us learn more about history and the world we live in.

Celebrate Friendship: Make new friends and play together. Friendship is one of the most important things that brings people together from all around the world.

Conclusion

As we remember the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, let's remember to be kind, respectful, and fair to everyone. By learning from history and understanding its lessons, we can all work together to make our world a better place where everyone feels valued and treated with dignity. Let's celebrate our differences and embrace the richness of our diverse world!
