Theme of the Week: Exploring the Middle East Through Play, Language & Culture

This week, our Hatchlings set off on a magical journey of discovery—exploring Egypt, celebrating Middle Eastern traditions, and diving into stories of history. From pyramids and henna art to flower stamping and firefighter play, our little ones had a week full of sensory fun, creativity, and cultural learning.

Come see how our Hatchlings grow through language, discovery, and creativity.

Modern Languages

Our babies set off on a mini-adventure to Egypt! They built Lego pyramids, played with desert sand, and uncovered treasures like camels (骆驼 luòtuo), cacti (仙人掌 xiānrénzhǎng), and pyramids (金字塔 jīnzìtǎ). While building and playing, they strengthened fine motor skills and learned exciting new Mandarin words.

Regional Education

We launched our new Middle East theme with sensory-rich play. The children scooped, poured, and shaped desert sand, while carefully stacking blocks to make their own pyramids. We also explored the cultural tradition of henna art—learning how leaves are ground into paste for beautiful designs. Inspired, our little artists decorated paper hands with colourful crayon patterns, building creativity and motor skills.

Creative Arts

Bright colours and flower-shaped stamps filled the room this week! The children pressed patterns onto paper, creating cheerful floral artwork. This activity encouraged both creativity and fine motor development in a fun and hands-on way.

History

History came alive through playful water exploration! Our Hatchlings became brave little firefighters, scrubbing away painted flames with sponges and water. Teamwork and motor skills shone as they worked together to put out the “fire.” The children were especially excited to see a real fire engine up close and hear its siren roar!

Specialist Sessions

This week, Miss Molly introduced a brand-new theme: Changes in the Weather. The children sang and moved along to favourites like Mr Golden Sun and Incy Wincy Spider. Magical twinkling stars lit up the ceiling, and parachute play brought plenty of laughter. It was a joyful start to our weather journey with Molly!

From pyramids to painted flames, this week gave our Hatchlings the chance to explore culture, history, and creativity—all while building the skills that help them grow.

Regional activities

To begin our new theme of the month, The Middle East and the Muslim World, the Blue Dragons explored beautiful traditional drawings and patterns. A tuff tray design introduced them to the region’s artistic heritage, and the children worked together to colour in the intricate details using chalk.

This activity encouraged focus, fine motor control, and creativity while sparking conversations about different cultures. The children showed such enthusiasm as they carefully chose colors and shared ideas, making it a vibrant and collaborative start to our cultural journey.

Specialist Teacher

On Wednesday, the children enjoyed a magical session with Miss Molly. We began with the cheerful Hello Song, shaking colourful egg shakers to the rhythm. Soon, bubbles filled the room, sparking joy, laughter, and lots of dancing.

Energy was high during our Sporty Minis session this week! After warming up with stretches, the Blue Dragons jumped into exciting games. A favourite was the traffic light cone game — running for green, slowing for yellow, and stopping for red. This helped them practise listening, coordination, and self-control while staying active.

From chalk patterns to sporty games and calming yoga, this week offered the Blue Dragons the perfect mix of creativity, energy, and mindfulness.

Regional Education

We began our exciting new monthly theme: The Middle East! The children explored traditional ceramic vases, observing their intricate designs and recreating their own patterns with paints and craft materials.

Outdoors, we created chalk mandalas, learning about symmetry, shape, and colour while talking about their cultural meanings. These activities helped to develop fine motor skills, creativity, and cultural awareness.

Specialist Teacher Sessions

This week’s Sporty Minis session was all about teamwork, balance, and coordination. The children worked together through fun games and challenges — running, balancing, and following instructions while cheering on their friends.

Yoga time brought a sense of calm and focus. The children practiced animal-inspired poses and simple breathing techniques, helping to support emotional awareness, mindfulness, and physical development.

Friday was full of rhythm and joy with Lucy Sparkles! The children tried out new instruments, danced with colourful scarves, and sang along to familiar and new songs. These sessions build language, confidence, and expressive movement in a fun and engaging way.

Outdoor Learning Adventures

The children visited the pond, observing insects, birds, and pond plants. Afterwards, they shared a picnic snack in the fresh air, practicing observation skills and enjoying the calm of nature.

At the fountains, water play brought laughter, curiosity, and sensory learning as the children explored movement, sound, and flow — with plenty of giggles and splashes!

Outdoor Math Fun

Math came alive outdoors this week! The children drew numbers with chalk, practiced recognition and formation, then turned the playground into a human number line — hopping, jumping, and counting together. These playful activities helped strengthen number sense, sequencing, and gross motor skills.

It’s been a week filled with movement, mindfulness, creativity, and exploration. We are so proud of our Dragon Flights for their enthusiasm, kindness, and curiosity!

Supporting a Cause Close to Our Hearts

Hatching Dragons is proud to support our founder Cenn John, running the Cardiff Marathon this October to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Inspired by the loss of a sibling to congenital heart disease and Down’s syndrome, this fundraiser aims to help children facing life-threatening illnesses.

We would love for our Hatching Dragons community to join us in supporting this cause. Every donation, no matter how small, can help change a child's future.
