Food and Nutrition

Our Food Philsophy

At the heart of everything we do is a deep commitment to nurturing healthy, happy children through exceptional nutrition. Our catering team has developed a carefully considered food philosophy aligned with guidance from the British Nutrition Foundation and informed by the Government’s Eatwell Guide, ensuring every meal supports the balanced dietary needs of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

We believe that food is about far more than nutrition alone. It is a powerful opportunity for learning, exploration, and connection. Our menus are thoughtfully designed not only to nourish growing bodies, but to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and help children develop a positive relationship with food from the very start.

A World of Flavour, Every Week

Each week, led by our Head Chef Param, children take part in our much-loved World Food Day, where they celebrate and discover cuisine from a different country. This unique approach broadens children’s cultural awareness, introduces them to exciting new flavours and textures, and encourages confidence in trying unfamiliar foods, often with wonderful results.

Our menus truly set us apart from many other nurseries. Rather than relying on repetitive, uninspiring meals, we offer world-inspired, varied menus that reflect our passion for food and its role in early development. We go beyond EYFS food guidance and national health recommendations, ensuring children:
  • Enjoy trying new foods
  • Learn about flavours and textures
  • Understand which foods support healthy bodies and why
  • Develop an early awareness of portion control

Key Nutrition Principles By Age

Babies

We strive to take parenting struggles away to make weaning processes easier and recognise that there isn’t one size fits all. Nursery staff create a partnership with families to ensure the baby’s nutritional needs are met.

Toddlers

Toddlers are provided with high-quality nutrition meeting standards set out by the UK Eatwell guide. Meals provide toddlers with a variety of foods and flavorus from our multicultural meal plans.

Preschoolers

Hatching Dragons understands that as children grow nutrition demands increase. At mealtimes the nursery provides increasingly more food to support maintenance and growth of older children.

Safety, Care and Expertise

Safeguarding your child’s health is our highest priority. We use robust management systems to receive up-to-date weekly reports on attendance, dietary requirements, and allergies, ensuring our in-house catering teams can cater safely and accurately to every child’s individual needs.
All of our chefs are professionally qualified in the culinary arts, hold advanced food hygiene certifications, and rigorously follow the Food Standards Agency’s Safer Food, Better Business guidance. Every meal is prepared with the highest standards of care, safety, and quality.

Supporting Families Beyond the Nursery

We believe great food education extends beyond our setting. That’s why we actively share the recipes children love with families, helping parents continue healthy habits at home and giving them insight into what their children enjoy (and what they’re still learning to like!)

At Hatching Dragons, food is an experience, not just a meal. Through vibrant, world-inspired menus and meaningful food education, we help children discover what they enjoy, build confidence around new tastes, and develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime. It’s a richer, more inspiring approach to nursery food — and one that children and families truly feel the difference in.
