Westminster School Highlights - September 6, 2024
Baby Room
This week in the Baby Dragons room, we dove into the autumn season with some fun and engaging activities.
The kids had a blast with sensory play, exploring the different textures of dried leaves, sand, and foam.
They loved the crunch of the leaves, the soft feel of the sand, and the bubbly foam, which really got their senses going.
We also had a great time with a tree painting activity.
The children used brushes and their fingers to create beautiful autumn trees, which was a wonderful way for them to express their creativity and learn about the changing seasons.
Next week, we’re excited to make sensory bottles with autumn-coloured items like small plastic leaves, fake acorns, and glitter.
These bottles will be a fun way for the kids to explore visually and touch different textures.
It’s been a fantastic week full of discovery and creativity, and we can’t wait to see what’s next!
Blue Dragons
Letter Dotting
Our Blue Dragons had a blast with letter tracing today!
They used paint squeeze bottles to dot along the outlines of the letters A, B, C, and D.
It was a fun way for them to create and trace their own letters. Great job, everyone!
Leaf Collecting
Autumn is near, and the Blue Dragons are embracing the season by collecting fallen leaves.
They used child-friendly scissors to cut the leaves they gathered with their teachers.
It’s a wonderful way to enjoy nature and start our new term!
Mandarin Magic Time
In Mandarin Magic Time, the children learned the words for "watermelon" (西瓜) and "train" (火车) in both English and Chinese.
They enjoyed a fun activity where they guessed which item was hidden under cups, making learning interactive and exciting!
Shape Tracing
This week, the Blue Dragons focused on squares!
They traced wooden squares to draw their own shapes and learned to recognize and identify squares.
We even cut out the squares together, making it a fantastic and engaging activity!
Dragon Flight’s Learning Adventures
This week, the Dragon Flight group enjoyed a variety of engaging and educational activities. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to:
Science Activity: Colour Mixing
The children had a blast mixing colours using droppers.
They explored primary colours—blue, red, and yellow—and discovered how combining these colours creates new shades.
This hands-on activity introduced them to the basics of colour theory in a fun way.
Phonics Activity: The Letter "O"
Our phonics lesson focused on the letter "O."
The children sang songs about the sound of "O" and practiced writing the letter in different forms.
This activity helped them build early reading and writing skills while making learning enjoyable.
Math Activity: Weight Comparisons
In math, the children explored weight by comparing different toys.
They used scales to weigh objects like Russian dolls and counted balls to balance the scales.
They also compared the weights of various animal toys, learning about heavier and lighter through interactive play.
Shape Recognition and Coloring
We worked on recognizing shapes such as triangles, circles, squares, and rectangles.
The children followed instructions to find and color shapes called out by the practitioner, which reinforced both shape recognition and listening skills.
Circle Time: Discovering Australia
During circle time, we continued our exploration of Australia.
The children learned about Australian food, wildlife, culture, and landscapes.
Friends who recently visited Australia shared their experiences during show-and-tell, making it a lively and interactive learning experience.
Mandarin Activity: Expanding Vocabulary
In Mandarin class, we learned new vocabulary related to city locations. This week’s words included:
城市 (chéngshì) – City
公园 (gōngyuán) – Park
花园 (huāyuán) – Garden
垃圾桶 (lājītǒng) – Bin
餐馆 (cānguǎn) – Restaurant
商店 (shāngdiàn) – Shop
The children practiced these words through games and activities, enhancing their Mandarin skills.
Wrapping Up the Week
It’s been a fantastic week of exploration and learning.
The children have enjoyed discovering new concepts in science, phonics, math, and geography, while also expanding their language skills in both English and Mandarin.
