Weekly Nursery Newsletter: A Week of Discovery, Play & Celebration
Week Ending: 17 May 2025
From storytelling and cultural exploration to sensory science and Father’s Day preparations, this week was packed with learning across every age group. Here’s what our Baby Dragons, Blue Dragons, and Dragon Flights got up to!
🗣️ Modern Languages & Communication
Across all rooms, children developed early language skills through music, stories, and play.
Baby Dragons:
- Read My Dad in preparation for Father’s Day, encouraging communication through pointing and babbling.
- Sang I Love You, Dad and Slippery Fish, using animal sounds and gestures to promote social interaction and speech.
Blue Dragons:
- Focused on the letter “S” with phonics songs and created a giant “S” on paper.
- Took part in a “Names in the Sand” activity, stamping letters and saying sounds aloud—a fun sensory literacy exercise!
Dragon Flights:
- Practiced writing the first letter of their dads’ names, linking early literacy with personal meaning.
- Launched a storytelling unit with the prompt: “Once upon a time, in this castle lived…”, inspiring imaginative storytelling.
🔤 Regional & Cultural Education
Baby Dragons:
- Introduced to Russian culture by creating tissue paper flags and coloring tigers linked to Russian wildlife.
- Learned about colors and patterns while developing fine motor skills and cultural curiosity.
Blue Dragons:
Celebrated Eid by designing hand henna patterns and learning about the cultural significance of the festival.
Dragon Flights:
Took a virtual trip to Poland, exploring castles and designing flags, which tied into their imaginative castle-themed storytelling.
🔬 STEAM & Sensory Play
Baby Dragons:
- Explored an ocean sensory tray filled with floating sea animals, and watched bubbles in a science tray, observing motion and texture.
- Created marks with dot markers and crayons while naming shapes like circle, triangle, and square.
Blue Dragons:
- Counted colorful beads, explored number matching with a play till, and sorted shapes in a sandy tray.
- Mixed soap and water to make bubbles in science time, while learning the Mandarin words for bubbles (泡泡) and water (水).
Dragon Flights:
- Witnessed a simulated volcano eruption, learning about geology and scientific observation.
- Crafted a 3D ocean aquarium for Ocean Day by designing fish and painting a sea backdrop—showcasing teamwork and creativity.
- Created fun monster crafts using playdough, fabric, and googly eyes to stimulate imagination and sensory exploration.
🧘♀️ Mindfulness & Movement
All Groups:
With Miss Molly, each group participated in themed sessions designed to support emotional regulation and gross motor development.
- Baby Dragons: Gentle yoga, breathing, and relaxing with scarves and calming music.
- Blue Dragons: Underwater music adventure with dance and movement, ending in a magical light show.
- Dragon Flights: Midweek yoga and mindfulness to support self-regulation and focus.
🏃 Active Play & Sports
- Blue Dragons: Practiced aiming and coordination with hoops and cones—turning physical play into friendly competition.
- Dragon Flights: Took part in outdoor rope jumping and movement challenges with Mini Sporties.
🏞️ Outdoor Learning & Excursions
Baby Dragons:
Visited Longmoore Park, Causton Sand Park, and St. George Park, where they played color-matching games and observed road construction—sparking conversations like “tipper truck!”
Blue Dragons:
Explored the Sand Playground on a sea animal hunt, combining teamwork and imaginative play.
🎨 Festival & Celebration Highlights
Father’s Day Across Rooms:
Children celebrated father figures with love, creativity, and laughter.
- Baby Dragons: Made clay medals and footprint art with personal messages.
- Blue Dragons: Worked on a surprise Father’s Day craft using paint and glue (shhh—it’s still a secret!).
- Dragon Flights: Prepared meaningful crafts and cards and celebrated with storytelling, song, and shared reflections.
Special Event: Sporty Minis + English Breakfast Morning with dads created a joyful family bonding experience!
🎵 Music & Creative Arts
- Dragon Flights: Built cardboard balalaikas and listened to Russian folk music by the Ossipov Orchestra—linking sound to culture.
- Miss Ella Sparkles: Brought nursery rhymes to life with her ukulele and velvet voice.
🎂 Weekly Highlight: George’s Birthday
We ended the week with a special celebration for George, who shared a giant fruit platter with friends. A wonderful moment of kindness and togetherness!
