Scandinavia
December is the month in which we look to the north - the cold reaches of Lapland, the Nordics and the Scandinavian nations at the roof of the world. We will look at the arts and crafts of Sweden, famous scientists from Norway, the Vikings and their travels to Greenland and Iceland, as well as the folk tales of the Sami...and much more besides. If that sounds like the kind of early years education you want, get in touch today...
Scandinavian Folk Tales
Scandinavia has a hugely rich cultural heritage and oral tradition with some of the most magical folk tales around. It is the birthplace of Odin, of Freya, of Trolls, of the mighty Thor and the Valkyries, and, of course, Hans Christian Andersen. Our story time focusses in and around the magic of this mythology by drawing on some of the best books of the region. Click below to find all of our resources and the Fairytalez blog for a list of amazing stories from the region
Scandinavian Folk Art
There are many different traditional folk art styles across Scandinavia - from Rosemaling in Norway through to Dalmålning or Dala painting from Sweden. It's typified by bright, bold colours of the natural world, no doubt to celebrate the world of colour throughout those dark, winter nights. We look to incorporate the colours and focus on bright flowers and the natural world in our textiles, weaving, painting and pottery classes across December
Scandinavian Thinkers
Scandinavia has been home to some of the greatest minds - from Soren Kirkegaard of Denmark, the "father of existentialism", to Emmanuel Swedenborg of Sweden, who as a scientist and a philosopher thought he'd cracked how to speak to Heaven! We take a look at some of the concepts behind the thought and the personalities of the people
Scandinavian Artists
We'll take a look at some of the most famous artists from Scandinavia, from Edvard Munch in Norway through to Carl Larsson of Sweden; from Lili Elbe in Denmark through to Ellen Theslef in Finland, Scandinavia has produced some of the best, most brooding contemporary artists and painters. We look at how the landscape informed their choices of colour and form, and why long dark nights require a bit of brightness!
Scandinavian Folk Music
For a region that spends half the year in more or less perpetual night (or day), the traditional lullabies of Scandinavia draw on the rich folkloric traditions of the Nordics and tell of wolves and bears, of Trolls wives and wayfarers journeying across the sea. Nordic Perspective has a wonderful blog and playlists for these songs...
Scandinavian Scientists
The home of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Peace Prize (despite making his fortune from explosives!). Our STEM teacher will take a look at scientists from the region who have distinguished themselves, along with some of experiments we can attempt to recreate their discoveries. From Birkeland's work on the Aurora, through to Tycho Brahe the world famous astronomer, Nordic Space has a great list of inspirational figures to learn from
