Theme of the Week: Exploring Australia & Beyond
This week, our little explorers enjoyed an exciting mix of activities themed around Australia, creative play, and real-world adventures. From making kangaroo paintings and Aboriginal boomerangs to exploring the Transport Museum, the children engaged their senses, developed new skills, and discovered different cultures through art, movement, and storytelling.
Curious about how we help our youngest learners thrive through play and care?
Modern Languages & Communication
In Mandarin, we explored a park theme, learning words like 花 (flower), 草 (grass), 树 (tree), 滑梯 (slide), and 秋千 (swing). The children created their own paper parks, adding trees, flowers, animals, slides, and swings. This hands-on activity helped them practice new vocabulary in a fun, creative way.
Sydney Opera
The children used cut up pieces of newspaper and orange slices to construct their own version of the opera house. They glued down the pieces of oranges and newspaper in the similar style. This activity helped with their concentration and their fine motor skills
Amazing Excursion – Transport Museum
Our trip to the Transport Museum was a big hit! The children explored buses, trains, and vintage cars. Some climbed into bus seats to pretend-drive, while others enjoyed studying wheels and lights up close. It was an exciting way to spark curiosity about the world around them.
STEAM – Sensory Sand Tray
The children explored a soft sand tray filled with toy fish, scooping, pouring, and discovering hidden sea creatures. This calming activity encouraged sensory development and early language skills.
Hygiene & Self-Care
We practised hygiene through role-play, washing toy animals with soapy water, learning to clean faces after meals, and tidying tables and chairs. These simple routines encouraged independence and responsibility.
Regional Education
The children explored Australian culture through creative activities:- Kangaroo Painting – Using brushes and brown paint, they experimented with big and small strokes.
- Boomerang Art – Cotton-bud dot painting inspired by Aboriginal patterns.
- Kangaroo Hop Game – Outdoor hopping fun to practise balance and coordination.
- Emu Feather Craft – Adding real feathers to emu outlines.
- Australian Flag Collage – Blue paper and star shapes to create the national flag.
Specialist Teacher
Miss Molly’s “Teddy Bear Picnic” session brought smiles all round. Wearing teddy bear ears, the children sang songs, shook shakers, chased bubbles, and ended with a cosy group story time.

Theme of the Week: Exploring Australia and celebrating cultures through play and discovery
This week, our preschoolers embarked on an exciting learning journey filled with cultural exploration, creativity, and hands-on experiences. From discovering emotions in Mandarin to exploring Australian habitats, visiting the Transport Museum, and enjoying specialist teacher sessions, the children learned, laughed, and created together.
Modern Languages and Communication
The children expanded their Mandarin skills by learning words for emotions and parts of the face, such as eyebrows, mouth, and eyes. Through crafts, matching games, and interactive activities with Teacher Xiao, they practised recognising facial expressions and matching them to the correct Mandarin words.
Regional Education
Our Australian adventure continued into the desert and mangroves, where we explored unique wildlife like kangaroos and koalas. During circle time and matching games, the children guessed where each animal belonged. At the craft table, they used textured materials to bring their animal outlines to life.
Amazing Excursion – Transport Museum
The visit to the Transport Museum in Covent Garden was a step back in time! Children boarded old double-decker buses, explored vintage trains, and learned about the people who help London travel every day. They took part in a scavenger hunt, found hidden signs, and even designed their own Oyster cards.
STEM
Children designed their own Australian flags, learning about its symbols like the Union Jack, Commonwealth Star, and Southern Cross constellation. This activity sparked conversations about history, culture, and geography, while also strengthening their maths skills through symmetry and proportion work.
Specialist Teachers
Our weekly specialist sessions brought both calm and energy to the week. Miss Molly led yoga for balance and mindfulness, Sporty Minis encouraged teamwork through active play, and Lucy Sparkles’ music sessions inspired rhythm, movement, and self-expression.
Thank you for another wonderful week of exploration and creativity. We are so proud of the curiosity, enthusiasm, and teamwork our preschoolers show every day — here’s to more exciting learning ahead!
Supporting a Cause Close to Our Hearts
Hatching Dragons is proud to support our founder Cenn John, running the Cardiff Marathon this October to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Inspired by the loss of a sibling to congenital heart disease and Down’s syndrome, this fundraiser aims to help children facing life-threatening illnesses.
We would love for our Hatching Dragons community to join us in supporting this cause. Every donation, no matter how small, can help change a child's future.
In case you missed our update last week regarding important changes—including the new fee structure starting 1st September 2025—we kindly ask you to review the details.
