Theme of the Week: Colours, Creativity & Cultural Discovery

This week was full of vibrant learning and imagination. From exploring colours in French and creating Aboriginal-inspired boomerangs, to discovering Australian animals and enjoying music with our specialist teachers, the children engaged in hands-on activities that blended creativity, culture, and fun.

Curious about how we help our youngest learners thrive through play and care?

Communication & Language: French Fun with Colours

The children learned to say rouge (red), jaune (yellow), and bleu (blue) using fabrics and picture cards. They excitedly pointed, named, and matched colours, turning language learning into a playful and engaging activity.

STEM

Linking to our Australia theme, the children designed and decorated their own boomerangs. Inspired by Aboriginal art and natural colours, they used paints and paper to create unique designs while learning how boomerangs are both tools and cultural symbols in Australia.

Regional Education

Our sand area was transformed into the Australian outback, where the children discovered toy kangaroos and koalas. Through play and storytelling, they explored where these animals live and what makes them special, deepening their understanding of Australia’s unique wildlife.

Specialist Teachers

With Miss Molly we enjoyed a teddy bear–themed session with songs, dancing, bubbles, and calming sensory play, combining music and mindfulness. With Lucy Sparkles the children sang tiger and mice songs, shook instruments to rhythms, floated fabrics in dance, and paused for mindful listening, blending fun, movement, and creativity.

It’s been a joyful week of discovery, creativity, and cultural learning. The children showed great curiosity, imagination, and teamwork in every activity!

Theme of the Week: New Zealand’s Nature & Culture

This week, our preschoolers travelled (through play and imagination!) to the beautiful country of New Zealand. From flags and native wildlife to Māori art and mindful movement, the children explored its rich culture and natural wonders in creative and engaging ways.
Looking for a preschool that blends learning with global culture and creative play?

Flag Fun & Landmarks

Children designed their own versions of the New Zealand flag, recognising the Union Jack and carefully placing red stars on the blue background. This activity encouraged them to notice connections between the New Zealand, Australian, and British flags, while also sparking conversations about the country’s history and landmarks.

Native Bird: The Kiwi

The children enjoyed a sticking activity to create the kiwi bird, using hay to represent its feather-like fur. They learned that the kiwi is a flightless bird, a national symbol of New Zealand, and discovered details about its habitat and life cycle.

Māori Symbols & Creativity

Our young artists explored Māori culture through clay work and tracing. They shaped the Koru spiral (a Māori symbol of new life and growth) into necklace pendants, later painting them with golden shimmer. They also traced other Māori designs, carefully observing patterns and learning about their meanings.

Communication & Modern Language

In Mandarin, children practiced numbers through a role-play chip shop game. Acting as shopkeepers and customers, they listened carefully and responded with the correct number of chips, building both listening and speaking confidence in a fun, practical way.

Specialist Teachers

Miss Molly’s session combined yoga, animals, and mindfulness. Wearing panda masks, the children stretched like different animals using yoga cards, then practiced mindful listening—tuning into the sounds of “nature” like birds, wind, and rustling leaves. This calming yet playful activity encouraged imagination, body awareness, and focus.

It’s been a week of creativity, culture, and discovery—bringing New Zealand’s landscapes, wildlife, and traditions to life for our preschoolers.

Supporting a Cause Close to Our Hearts

Hatching Dragons is proud to support our founder Cenn John, running the Cardiff Marathon this October to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Inspired by the loss of a sibling to congenital heart disease and Down’s syndrome, this fundraiser aims to help children facing life-threatening illnesses.

We would love for our Hatching Dragons community to join us in supporting this cause. Every donation, no matter how small, can help change a child's future.
