Exploring Oceans, Colours, and Cultures
This week, our little learners embarked on a colourful and sensory journey, diving into the wonders of the ocean, learning new languages, celebrating traditions, and moving their bodies with joy. From French rhymes to water play, mindful tea parties to energetic sports, it was a week full of discovery, creativity, and fun!
Curious about how we help our youngest learners thrive through play and care?
Modern Languages
In French, the children used puppets to revisit the rhyme Johnny Johnny Yes Papa, learning the words for “yes” (oui), “no” (non), and “sugar” (du sucre). They explored colours and animals through a rice sensory activity, matching jungle animals to their colours and learning the primary colours in French — red (rouge), blue (bleu), and yellow (jaune). It was a lively and sensory-rich way to strengthen early language skills.
In Mandarin, the children enjoyed a water play adventure combining marine life and transportation. They learned words such as bridge (桥), water (水), river (河), boat (船), people (人), and duck (鸭子) while pretending to sail boats, swim as ducks, and explore waterways. This activity blended creative storytelling with new vocabulary.
Regional Education
A sensory tray filled with oobleck, plastic fish, and bubbles transformed into an under-the-sea playground. The children squished, scooped, and explored the magical mixture, learning about sea life and how water moves and feels. Laughter, curiosity, and learning flowed like waves.
STEM
Outdoors, the children painted on clear film using ocean shades of blue and green. As they painted, they learned about the Indian Ocean, its connection to Australia, and the Great Barrier Reef. Conversations about coral reefs and sea creatures sparked curiosity about protecting our oceans.
International Festival – Afternoon Tea Week
During Mindful Molly, we celebrated Afternoon Tea Week with a teddy bear tea party. The children sang the Teapot Song and practiced mindfulness through slow, careful tea pouring. The calm atmosphere encouraged both imagination and relaxation.

Sporty Minis brought high energy to the week! The children stretched like giraffes and snakes, ran cone courses, balanced bean bags on different body parts, and bounced balls. It was a fun-filled session building coordination, balance, and gross motor skills.
Thank you for another wonderful week of learning, playing, and exploring with us at Canada Water. We can’t wait to see what next week brings!

Exploring Australian Landmarks
This week, our preschoolers travelled across Australia through arts, construction, storytelling, and movement. From the sails of the Sydney Opera House to the colourful coral of the Great Barrier Reef, every activity sparked curiosity, creativity, and a deeper understanding of this fascinating country. We blended hands-on making, imaginative play, and role-play traditions to create a week rich in learning and joy.
Regional Education
At the arts and crafts table, the children recreated the iconic Sydney Opera House using paper plates to mimic its sail-like roof. They explored shapes, symmetry, and structure, while learning how the venue hosts performances from orchestras to ballets. This activity encouraged fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and a playful introduction to architecture and the performing arts.
In the construction area, visual prompts of the Adelaide Oval Footbridge and Sydney Harbour Bridge inspired the children’s own bridge designs. Using building blocks, they experimented with balance and strength, testing if their creations could hold toy cars or figures. This hands-on exploration nurtured teamwork, problem-solving, and early engineering skills.
Art and Ecology
During circle time, children “dived” into the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef through images, books, and virtual adventures. They discovered coral gardens, colourful fish, sea turtles, and even sharks. Extending this, they used pipe cleaners to create coral-inspired art, developing fine motor skills while learning about ocean ecosystems and marine protection.
Drama & Movement Play
In a lively movement game, children became stingrays, turtles, jellyfish, and dolphins. Using animal movement cards, they guessed sea creatures from their motions, adding a layer of critical thinking to active play. This activity built gross motor skills, body awareness, and self-expression, while reinforcing their knowledge of marine animals.
International Festival
To mark Afternoon Tea Week, the preschool hosted a special pretend tea party. Children practiced polite phrases, turn-taking, and table manners while “serving” tea to friends and teddies. They matched teacup patterns, explored a role-play tea corner, and even practiced writing in a tray filled with tea herbs. It was a wonderful way to combine social skills, literacy, and cultural traditions.
Specialist Teachers
On Wednesdays, Miss Molly’s yoga sessions brought calm focus, balance, and mindfulness to the children’s day. Thursdays burst with energy during Sporty Minis, where active games built gross motor skills, teamwork, and confidence through movement.
Thank you for another amazing week of learning, creativity, and fun. We look forward to more exciting adventures next week!
Supporting a Cause Close to Our Hearts
Hatching Dragons is proud to support our founder Cenn John, running the Cardiff Marathon this October to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Inspired by the loss of a sibling to congenital heart disease and Down’s syndrome, this fundraiser aims to help children facing life-threatening illnesses.
We would love for our Hatching Dragons community to join us in supporting this cause. Every donation, no matter how small, can help change a child's future.
Extended Learning: Weekend School
Our Holiday Clubs offer STEAM fun, language learning, and field trips for school-aged children.
