Theme of the Week: Family, Colours & Cultural Creativity

This week, our Baby Dragons enjoyed a vibrant mix of language, culture, and creativity. From learning about families in Mandarin and colours in French to building pyramids, creating camel art, and molding their own playdough, the children explored the world through songs, play, and hands-on activities. Sporty garden fun rounded off a week filled with teamwork, imagination, and discovery.
Curious about how we help our youngest learners thrive through play and care?

Communication & Language

Our little learners explored the theme of family through songs, picture cards, and a family tree. They learned simple words like māma (mom), bàba (dad), and nǎinai (grandma), proudly pointing and repeating as they connected the new vocabulary to their own families.

In French, the children continued learning primary colours — rouge (red), bleu (blue), and jaune (yellow). Using pipettes and coloured water, they sorted into buckets, reinforcing their vocabulary in a playful, hands-on way.

STEM

As part of our Middle Eastern theme, the babies created colourful pyramids using building blocks and paint. This fun sensory experience helped them explore shapes, textures, and colours while practicing fine motor skills. Their pride in stamping bright, pyramid-inspired masterpieces was wonderful to see!

Regional Education

The children discovered camels — the “ships of the desert” — through a collaborative mural and textured art. Working together, they painted a large camel mural and then added sand and glitter to individual camel crafts. This activity combined teamwork, creativity, and sensory exploration, while linking to desert life and Middle Eastern culture.

Clay & Playdough Creations

The babies explored clay molding with pipettes, cutters, and coloured water, experimenting with textures, colours, and shapes. They also made their very own playdough, kneading and mixing ingredients — a wonderful way to boost hand strength, coordination, and creativity while exploring maths concepts like measuring.

Sporty Fun

Outdoors, the children raced with energy during relays, building teamwork and confidence. They also practiced balancing balls on cones, strengthening focus, coordination, and fine motor skills. The garden echoed with laughter, cheering, and joy as they played together.

Our Baby Dragons showed such enthusiasm and growing confidence in every activity — we are so proud of their achievements and the joy they bring to learning each day.

Theme of the Week: Ancient Egypt, Islamic Art & Global Communication

This week, our Preschool Dragons set out on a cultural and creative adventure. From learning Mandarin colours and numbers to designing Islamic tiles, exploring the pyramids, and celebrating International Literacy Day, the children engaged in activities that sparked curiosity, imagination, and global awareness. Alongside our cultural journey, dinosaurs roared to life in small-world play, while STEAM learning inspired young engineers to build their very own pyramids.

Modern Languages & Communication

The children continued revising colours in Mandarin, practicing careful pronunciation and tones. Using pom poms and tweezers, we added fun number games that reinforced counting and colour recognition while building fine motor skills. Through playful repetition, the children gained confidence in recalling Chinese words for both colours and numbers.

Regional Education

We explored the beauty of Islamic art by studying the symmetry and geometric patterns found in traditional tiles. After designing their own intricate patterns, the children were proud to see their creations laminated as keepsakes. This activity nurtured shape recognition, creativity, and an appreciation for cultural artistry.

Our journey continued to Ancient Egypt, where children investigated the mighty pyramids and the desert landscapes that surround them. Using sand, they experimented with building pyramids of different sizes, learning about shapes, scale, and comparison. We also explored hieroglyphs through mark-making, sparking early writing skills and imagination.

Festival of the Week: International Literacy Day

To celebrate International Literacy Day, the preschoolers enjoyed a variety of language-rich experiences. From reading and singing to early phonics, mark-making, and sound games, each activity deepened their awareness of language. These experiences strengthened vocabulary, creativity, and communication, showing children how marks and sounds can be powerful tools for storytelling.

Dinosaur Small World Play

Dinosaurs have captured the children’s imaginations! Together we created a dinosaur land complete with a volcano, sandy plains, rocky habitats, and pinecone “plants.” Children carefully placed dinosaurs in their new world, separating herbivores from carnivores and working cooperatively to design their environment. This interactive play encouraged creativity, problem-solving, and social skills.

STEM Learning

Inspired by the Great Pyramid of Giza, our Preschool Dragons became engineers, building their own 3D pyramid structures from playdough and sticks. This hands-on challenge helped them experiment with stability, balance, and structure, bringing engineering concepts to life in a playful and imaginative way.

Thank you, families, for supporting their learning journey with us each day.

Supporting a Cause Close to Our Hearts

Hatching Dragons is proud to support our founder Cenn John, running the Cardiff Marathon this October to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Inspired by the loss of a sibling to congenital heart disease and Down’s syndrome, this fundraiser aims to help children facing life-threatening illnesses.

We would love for our Hatching Dragons community to join us in supporting this cause. Every donation, no matter how small, can help change a child's future.
