Language, Lights & Little Chicks: A Joyful Week at Our Canada Water Nursery
Baby & Toddler Room Highlights | Childcare Near Canada Water & Canary Wharf
At our Canada Water nursery, our youngest learners had a week full of warmth, wonder, and discovery. From exploring French greetings with puppets to watching chicks hatch before their eyes, our babies and toddlers engaged all their senses as they learned, played, and grew. Here's a peek at what made this week so special for our littlest dragons!
Regional Education: Picasso-Inspired Self-Portraits
Even our tiniest artists had a chance to shine this week as we explored the creative world of Pablo Picasso. Using mirrors, colourful shapes, and bold paint, children made their own playful abstract self-portraits.
This artistic activity encouraged:
- Self-recognition and awareness
- Colour exploration and shape matching
- Creative self-expression in a developmentally-appropriate format
We believe in nurturing imagination early on at our nursery in South London through approachable art inspired by great masters.
Modern Language & Communication: Saying Bonjour with Confidence
This week, we introduced simple French greetings to our babies and toddlers through play. Using a soft puppet friend and a ball-rolling circle game, the children took turns saying “Bonjour” and practicing “Comment ça va?” in a cheerful and interactive way.
This gentle activity encouraged:
- Turn-taking and social engagement
- Early listening and speaking skills
- Confidence in expressing new sounds
At our baby room near Canary Wharf, we support early communication through multi-sensory language play—laying the foundation for speech development in both English and modern languages.
Festival of the Week: Celebrating Spring with New Life
Our Easter celebration brought something truly magical—real chicks hatching in our incubator! The children watched in wonder as tiny beaks pecked through shells, seeing life begin in front of their eyes.
This gentle moment:
- Connected nature with everyday nursery life
- Sparked curiosity, empathy, and awe
- Supported earlier learning about animals and care
It was a joyful way to share the spirit of Spring with our babies and toddlers at our Canada Water nursery.
At our nursery in Canada Water, we believe cultural exploration helps children develop global awareness and a love for learning.
Festival of the Week: Earth Day Gardening
Our babies also celebrated Earth Day outdoors, watering plants in the garden beds with great excitement. Through this nurturing hands-on activity, the children learned about environmental care, responsibility, and the importance of looking after our beautiful planet—essential life lessons we proudly incorporate into everyday experiences.

Exploring Spain, French Words & Springtime Science at Our Canada Water Preschool
Weekly Highlights | Preschool Learning at Our Nursery Near Canada Water & Canary Wharf
This week at our Canada Water nursery, our preschoolers took a colourful journey through Southern Europe, explored French language basics, celebrated spring with a garden party, and observed a real-life chicken hatching! Through music, art, language, and science, the children continued their rich, play-based learning journey—right here in Central South London.
Modern Languages: Bonjour and Colour Mixing in French
In our Modern Languages and Communication session, the children were introduced to French greetings and colours in a lively, interactive setting. They learned to say:
“Bonjour” (Hello)
“Comment ça va?” (How are you?)
“Je m’appelle…” (My name is…)
To make it even more engaging, the children caught soft balls during turn-taking to cue their greetings, sang “Bonjour Bonjour” by Alain Le Lait, and danced together with enthusiasm.
They also learned key French colour names: bleu, jaune, rouge, orange, violet, and vert, mixing primary colours on their spring flower artworks to reinforce both language and colour theory—a multisensory approach we proudly use in our preschool near Canary Wharf.
Regional Education: A Journey Through Spain in Art & Music
As part of our Southern Europe cultural theme, our preschoolers explored Spain through:
- Flamenco Dance: Children admired vibrant flamenco costumes and created layered paper skirts, immersing themselves in the colours and traditions of Spanish folklore.
- Gaudí’s Lizard (“El Drac”): Inspired by architect Antoni Gaudí’s famous mosaic sculpture in Barcelona, children made their own colourful lizards using textured materials and mosaic-style pieces.
- Picasso-Inspired Portraits: Our little artists explored Cubism, using shapes and colour blocks to create expressive self-portraits, learning that art doesn’t have to mirror reality—it’s a form of free expression.
These engaging activities build art appreciation, fine motor skills, and cultural awareness, enriching our early years curriculum in Canada Water.
Spring Celebration: Hatching Garden Party
To welcome the season, we hosted a joyful Spring Garden Party! Families joined us in the sunshine to:
- Enjoy delicious food and play fun games like bowling and charades
- Get hands-on with planting real flowers, using gardening tools to pot and replant
The highlight? Watching our real chicks hatch! The children observed the miracle of life as the chicks broke out of their shells that very morning—a magical moment of wonder and learning at our Canada Water preschool.
STEAM Learning: The Life Cycle of a Chicken
As part of our science-led STEAM curriculum, the children explored the life cycle of a chicken:
- From egg → embryo → hatchling → chick → chicken
- Using stories, diagrams, and real observations
- Tracking development inside our classroom incubator
Seeing the chicks hatch was a hands-on learning moment that taught biology, patience, and caregiving, while reinforcing curiosity and scientific understanding—essential to our early years programme in South London.
