Top 10 Nursery management Platforms to improve Parental Communication

In the dynamic landscape of UK childcare, nursery management platforms have emerged as essential tools for enhancing operational efficiency and fostering seamless communication between nurseries and families. These innovative systems offer a range of features designed to streamline administrative tasks, track child development, and facilitate real-time updates for parents. As we delve into the top 10 nursery management platforms, we will explore how each system uniquely contributes to improving nursery operations and strengthening the connection between educators and families. By comparing and contrasting these platforms, we aim to provide valuable insights into selecting the right solution to meet the diverse needs of modern nurseries.

EY Works

EY Works started out with just one service module to their nursery operating system: EY or early years Log. Primarily aimed at the learning and development frameworks of the early years foundation stage, it was and still is an intuitive platform that allowed nursery teachers to observe (photos and written evidence) a child's developmental progress achieved over the course of any given day, assess it against the 7 areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework and then plan subsequent activities linked to their observations to progress the child's development further. In that, it provided a comprehensive tool for both parents and nursery teachers to see, visually and graphically, how their child was progressing in their progress trackers, relative to their peers. Available via the EY Log parent app, it is native to your phone so you can access and communicate on the go.

Since then, they've rolled out EY Manage, the nursery management system for school leaders to manage staff deployment and children's roll and generate greater levels of reporting analytics on attendance and occupancy; EYparent, a dedicated two way Instant Messaging platform that provides parents direct access to the back-end data that informs both EY Log and EY Manage, allowing parents to fill out accident forms, review assessment progress, check daily diary submissions to review what their child has eaten (and how much!), how they slept (and for how long), and how many nappies have been used, outside of what they've done with their day (along with photos and video evidence to boot); and now EY People and much more besides.

Strengths:

The best reporting and analytics that you can get out of all of the various systems - speaking as an operator, the ability to generate reports to assess trends, at a macro level, between staff and children is key. One of the reasons we chose EY Works over the other platforms, is the array of reporting analytics that you can secure to aid management decisions - quick tools to track and assess accident hotspots, developmental progress shortfalls (and by cohort - boys vs girls; age band specific trends; English as an Additional Language children and more besides) and occupancy forecasts to understand 

Downsides

There are other platforms (notably Famly) that have a much slicker User Interface (U/I) than EY Works, even though they have invested to improve the overall look and feel of the product(s). Sometimes the products are clunky, and interoperability has been problematic - because they started with one product (EY Log) that focussed on learning and development and then retrofitted other products onto the other back-end, it was known (at least in the past) to not necessarily link the same information into the same common back-end architecture. So updating one platform might not necessarily update the other. Much of that has changed, but you're still sometimes left scratching your head wondering why the product map didn't just put it all together to begin with!

famly

Famly started off life more or less as a parent communications tool, rather than assessment framework, believing that with a superior U/I that focussed on ease of use for both parent and nursery teacher, it could draw on the advancements in communications made by social media platforms, such as facebook, to generate community, with far higher interaction between clients and school. They invested heavily in the look and feel of the native app that clients would use to incentivise adoption, which broadly worked - it has consistently been rated the best performer by parents, because of its simplicity and focus on high quality communications between them and their staff, directly, allowing you a little window into the school, in your pocket.

Since then, Famly has similarly expanded its product offer to focus on nursery school administration - staffing and invoice collection, reporting and more - to provide a fully integrated model for nursery operators to control their schools through, much in the same way that EY Works has, and the others have. 

Strengths:

Famly is probably known to be the most "tech" oriented of the platform providers. Unlike others, which were founded by people who worked in the early years sector (at least for the most part), these guys were tech first and foremost, and you can feel it in the functionality and slick nature of the product. Clients will rave about the look and feel and functionality, and staff, who don't require too much functionality in the administrative systems, will similarly enjoy its ease of use. It's also, probably, one of the most progressive in product development, leveraging partnerships with other tech-enabled providers, such as payment gateways in Stripe, to facilitate more immediate inter-operability with other business management tools, which stems from its provenance as a tech company. So expect quicker product updates that are more geared towards the tools emerging in the future

Weaknesses:

But for all that, I've found that the lack of insight as to how schools actually function and operate to be quite limiting. The reporting and analytics in particular were not as established as some of their competitors, which is / was why we ultimately chose EY Works over Famly. Being able to pull out decent CSV and excel of data on accidents, trend analysis on cohots level educational outputs and on staffing allow us to take better commercial decisions at the school and at the group level, even if the clientele appreciate how it looks. 

Connect-Childcare

Connect Childcare is one of the longest standing nursery and early years educational tech products in the market today. Connect Childcare's iConnect is an online learning journal software that enables practitioners to log observations, carry out assessments, and communicate with parents seamlessly. In that, it operates much in the same way as all of the established platform providers do, albeit this one claims to have the longest standing corporate client base in the business. It is one of the oldest businesses in the space, for sure, but in my experience, that doesn't necessarily mean that it is the best. I'll put in a massive caveat here, which is that I haven't actually product tested their package for a couple of years now, but when I did I found that it felt and functioned as a legacy product - not really geared to plug into the tech landscape of the 21st century. Very much a simple SQL database backend in look and feel, the exports were (at the time) unintuitive spreadsheets that required some time and labour to rejig for data outputs. Dashboard friendly it was not.

That clearly may have changed - some people in the industry I know rave about the product so perhaps innovation has changed the look and feel of what was once a rather cumbersome piece of kit. 

Strengths

While iConnect offers a robust platform for logging observations and facilitating communication, it is not without its challenges. Users have reported that the software can sometimes feel outdated, with a user interface that lacks the modern polish found in newer platforms. Additionally, the system's reliance on a traditional SQL database can make data exports cumbersome, requiring extra effort to format reports for practical use. This can be particularly time-consuming for nursery staff who need quick access to insights. Despite these hurdles, iConnect remains a trusted choice for many, thanks to its long-standing presence in the industry and its focus on supporting corporate clients with customisable workflows.

The company claims to focus on Innovation and Compassion, although I'm unsure how the latter comes into the product offering or customer service proposition. It offers all the same key functionalities as the others - digital learning journals, attendance tracking, and parent communication tools. These functionalities are designed to streamline administrative tasks, foster dynamic interactions, and provide a supportive environment for children's development. By integrating these elements, Nursery Story empowers nurseries to focus on what truly matters—nurturing the growth and potential of every child.
