What a joyful and enriching week we’ve had in the Baby Room! Our little learners have been immersed in music, movement, sensory science, and culture as part of our African theme building curiosity, early communication, and confidence every step of the way.
Curious about how we combine culture, confidence, and creativity in the early years?
This week, we supported early language through expressive storytelling and Makaton. Babies practiced signs for happy and sad using mirrors and expressive play. During storytime, we read Jungle Animals Touchy-Feely Book by Fiona Watt, with babies exploring textures while listening to animal sounds—boosting sensory awareness and communication.
Babies explored African culture through rhythm and texture. Using drums and shakers, they clapped and bounced to traditional beats. We also introduced African textiles, offering colourful sensory play that sparked early cultural curiosity.
We brought the jungle to life outdoors! Babies searched for toy animals hidden in a bushy play area, fed them with leaves and toy food, and mimicked animal sounds like growling tigers and trumpeting elephants. They also climbed and balanced on soft obstacles—building strength and coordination.
To celebrate Summer Fun Week, we created a beach-themed sensory tray with brown sand, starfish, and blue cornflour water. Babies scooped, patted, and explored the textures—developing fine motor skills and exploring early science through messy play.
Our sensory science play continued with a colourful bubble snake activity! Babies were fascinated by the long, foamy bubbles—watching, touching, and giggling as they explored texture, colour, and movement in this playful STEAM experience.
In Mindful Movement with Miss Molly, our little ones stretched, wiggled, and relaxed with baby-friendly poses and calm breathing creating a peaceful moment to wind down the week.
This week was all about celebrating our children’s achievements as they prepared for graduation! From cultural exploration to phonics games and creative movement, the Dragon Flights had a joyful and enriching experience across every learning area
In Mandarin, the children enjoyed calm singing sessions to review familiar words and numbers. These gentle sessions supported their growing confidence in bilingual vocabulary as they prepared for the end-of-term celebration.
Children explored pyramids and ancient African-inspired symbols, even writing their own names using creative hieroglyphs. These hands-on experiences sparked discussion, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of African history and culture.
The countdown to our graduation ceremony is on! Children have been practicing their songs and performances with excitement and pride. It’s been a wonderful celebration of growth and transition as we prepare to share this special milestone with families.
In Mindful Molly’s sessions children created colourful mandalas and explored yoga-inspired poses to calm their minds and bodies. This mindful art session supported emotional awareness, creativity, and focus.
In Sporty Minis, from balancing games to stretching activities, this week’s sports session helped children prepare physically and mentally for their big day—building both confidence and coordination.
This week in Blue Dragons, our curious explorers tiptoed like mice, painted roaring lions, counted colourful caterpillars, and met a special friend from the desert—all through playful learning, creativity, and cultural exploration.
The children learned new Mandarin words Lion: 狮子 (shī zi), Camel: 骆驼 (luò tuó), Red: 红色 (hóng sè), Yellow: 黄色 (huáng sè). Through animal walks and vibrant painting, they reinforced vocabulary with movement, storytelling, and colour recognition—building early language skills in a fun, interactive way.
Children did Counting Caterpillars using magnetic cubes and number towers, children matched quantities to numerals from 1 to 5. They also did Big or Small? They explored size comparison by sorting toys and shapes building their understanding of measurement and categorisation through hands-on play.
Children learned about camels, their special adaptations, and how they survive in the desert. This sparked storytelling and pretend play, with children mimicking the camels’ walk and naming their body parts—linking geography with movement and imagination.
In our science club, children mixed coloured water, foam, and scented oils to create magical “potions.” This sensory science activity helped them observe cause and effect, blending, and scent recognition—encouraging them to wonder and experiment.
Children used forks, brushes, and fingers to paint bold, textured lion manes. They chose red and yellow to reflect what they learned in Mandarin, building links between language and art through sensory exploration.
In Mindful Molly’s session, children got a peaceful moment to stretch, breathe, and tune into their bodies through mindfulness activities that supported calmness and focus.
In Sports Mini, they did crawling through tunnels, balancing, and jumping supported gross motor development and built confidence through movement.
Sensory Exploration: Light & Shape Discovery
In our glowing sensory tub, children explored circles, triangles, and squares hidden in textured materials. Watching lights shift and change created a calming, magical space to discover shape and light through touch.
Thank you for another colourful, creative, and confident week. We can’t wait to see what next week brings!
Hatching Dragons is proud to support our founder Cenn John, running the Cardiff Marathon this October to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Inspired by the loss of a sibling to congenital heart disease and Down’s syndrome, this fundraiser aims to help children facing life-threatening illnesses.
