Theme of the Week: Seasons, Culture, and Celebration!

This week in our Baby Dragons room, we explored the beauty of seasonal change, cultural discovery, and festive fun! From learning about the Chinese solar term ‘Descent of Frost’ (霜降, Shuāngjiàng) to celebrating Halloween and creating autumn-inspired art, the children enjoyed a wonderful mix of sensory, language, and creative experiences.

The children discovered one of the 24 Chinese solar terms — ‘Descent of Frost’ (霜降, Shuāngjiàng) — marking the shift from autumn to winter. To bring this to life, they collected leaves from the garden and made beautiful collages, sprinkling salt on top to represent frost forming on the leaves.
Through this activity, they learned new Mandarin words, explored nature, and deepened their understanding of how the seasons change. It was a lovely way to combine creativity, observation, and early language learning.

STEAM Exploration

In STEAM, our focus was on art and creativity. The children used real leaves and salt to recreate the frosty effect of ‘Descent of Frost’ and decorated colourful maple leaves to celebrate Canada — part of our North America theme. These sensory art experiences helped the children experiment with textures, colours, and materials while strengthening fine motor skills and artistic confidence.

International Festival

We had a spooktacular time celebrating Halloween! The children created cheerful paper pumpkins and friendly ghosts, exploring colours, textures, and shapes. It was a fun and festive way to spark creativity while developing fine motor skills and imagination.

Regional Education

As part of our exploration of North America, the children learned about the region’s diverse landscapes — from the icy Arctic to the colourful forests of Canada. They enjoyed Arctic-themed water play with toy animals, discovering what cold environments feel like through sensory play.
To celebrate Canada, they also created bright maple leaf crafts, learning about its importance as a national symbol and connecting art with geography and culture.

Specialist Teachers

Miss Molly brought the season to life with a special sensory session filled with autumn leaves, parachute games, and Halloween hats! The children sang, moved, and played together, building rhythm, coordination, and seasonal joy.

In Sporty Minis, the children had an exciting session filled with stretching, animal walks, and playful throwing games. They hopped like kangaroos, crawled like crabs, and ran with big smiles! These activities supported balance, coordination, and teamwork through joyful movement.

It’s been a wonderful week full of exploration, creativity, and celebration. Thank you to our parents for your continued support

Theme of the Week: North American Adventures, Seasonal Stories, and Spooky Celebrations!

This week in Preschool, our young learners embarked on a journey across North America, discovering animals, habitats, and landmarks while also celebrating language, creativity, and teamwork. From acting out “The Ginormous Radish” in Mandarin to exploring the Grand Canyon through hands-on STEAM play and celebrating Halloween with friends and families — it’s been a week full of imagination, learning, and joy!

The Ginormous Radish
Our preschoolers took part in a lively Mandarin drama session, bringing to life the classic tale “The Ginormous Radish.” The children learned a fun Mandarin song and then acted out the story, taking on roles such as the farmer, his family, and the helpful animals who all worked together to pull the enormous radish from the ground!
This engaging role-play helped children expand their Mandarin vocabulary while also reinforcing teamwork, cooperation, and communication — key skills for confident learners.

Regional Education: Exploring North America

As part of our ongoing exploration of North America, the children learned about the Bald Eagle — the national animal of the United States. Through pictures, movement games, and dramatic poses, they discovered how these majestic birds live, hunt, and raise their young. The children especially enjoyed learning that baby eagles start out fluffy and grey before growing into striking white-headed adults.
They then created their own Bald Eagle handprint art, turning their little hands into soaring wings — a perfect mix of creativity and knowledge!

Continuing our regional focus, we journeyed to Mexico and explored the Sonoran Desert — home to towering cacti and unique wildlife. The children used their senses to explore textured materials like sand, stones, and twigs, comparing how each one felt — soft, rough, or prickly!
They also discussed how the desert’s hot, dry climate differs from the cooler, wetter weather we experience in the UK. As they made marks in the sand — zigzags, spirals, and wavy lines — they built their fine motor skills and early writing confidence.

International Festivals

Halloween week was full of excitement and creativity! The children danced, sang, and made spooky crafts to get ready for Friday’s big celebration. On the day, everyone arrived in fantastic costumes — from friendly witches and fairies to brave pirates and superheroes!

Our room was transformed with pumpkins, cobwebs, and festive lights for our Halloween party, where families joined in for fun games, delicious treats, and even a friendly pumpkin-carving competition. It was a joyful afternoon of laughter, community, and celebration.

STEM

This week’s STEAM project took us to one of the world’s most breathtaking landmarks — the Grand Canyon! The children recreated it using mud, sand, and water, learning how rivers carve through rock over time. They carefully poured water from the top of their dirt “mountains,” observing how it cut through to form small canyons of their own.

This experiment beautifully illustrated erosion and natural change — and the children were amazed to see science in action right before their eyes!

Specialist Teachers

Miss Molly led a Halloween-themed yoga session that focused on balance, mindfulness, and fun! The children practiced spooky poses while wearing witches’ hats, moved to Halloween tunes, and learned how breathing can help them stay calm and focused.

Coach Jack brought energy and excitement to our Thursday session, where children practiced running, jumping, and obstacle navigation. These activities helped strengthen gross motor skills, coordination, and confidence — all while having lots of fun together!

Friday’s Lucy Sparkles music session was all about Halloween songs and sounds! The children loved singing, dancing, and experimenting with instruments in this sensory, musical experience — the perfect end to a busy, fun-filled week.
