A Week of Discovery, Creativity, and Outdoor Adventures at Our Canada Water Nursery

At our nursery near Canada Water and Canary Wharf, every week is filled with exciting hands-on experiences that nurture creativity, language development, science exploration, and a love for the natural world. Our little learners have been busy discovering new cultures, exploring science, and developing key early skills in a playful and engaging environment.

STEAM Learning: Earth Day Science Experiments

In celebration of Earth Day, our babies became mini-scientists with a baking soda and vinegar experiment. Watching colourful eruptions form an “earth” shape was pure magic! The children excitedly grabbed beakers, poured vinegar, and observed the fizzy, vibrant reaction.

This activity supported fine motor development, sensory exploration, and early scientific thinking—core elements of our STEAM approach at our Canada Water nursery.

Regional Education – Exploring Spain: Patterns and Cultural Art

As part of our regional education focus, the children immersed themselves in the vibrant colours and textures of Spanish art and design. Using images and fabrics, they recreated traditional Spanish patterns with crayons, experimenting with bold strokes and intricate details.

This cultural journey fostered creativity, cultural appreciation, and fine motor skills, offering a colourful introduction to Spanish heritage at our Canary Wharf preschool.

Modern Language: Mandarin Animal Adventures

In our Mandarin language sessions, the children roared with excitement as they learned animal names through fun, catchy nursery rhymes. They explored words like:

Lǎohǔ (tiger)

Bānmǎ (zebra)

Dà xiàng (elephant)

Singing, movement, and role-play made language learning memorable, boosting bilingual vocabulary acquisition and early communication skills at our Central London childcare setting.

Excursion: Dinosaur Discovery and Farm Adventures

Our week ended with an exciting excursion to Crystal Palace’s Amazing Dinosaur Trail, where the children marveled at life-sized dinosaur sculptures, enhancing their early science knowledge and curiosity about the past. A storytelling session brought the dinosaurs to life, and a visit to the nearby farm allowed the children to meet friendly animals up close.

These outings offer unforgettable experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world adventures, a hallmark of the holistic learning experience we offer at our nursery in Canada Water.

Regional Education: Greek Patterns and Landmarks

Our little artists took an imaginative trip to Greece by recreating famous landmarks like the Parthenon and Temple of Apollo using vibrant paper and cardboard. This hands-on project introduced architectural design concepts while strengthening fine motor development and sparking lively conversations about Greek history.

At our nursery in Canada Water, we believe cultural exploration helps children develop global awareness and a love for learning.

Festival of the Week: Earth Day Gardening

Our babies also celebrated Earth Day outdoors, watering plants in the garden beds with great excitement. Through this nurturing hands-on activity, the children learned about environmental care, responsibility, and the importance of looking after our beautiful planet—essential life lessons we proudly incorporate into everyday experiences.

Exploring Ancient Greece, Earth Day, and Creative Adventures at Our Preschool in Canada Water

Preschool Highlights | Early Years Learning in Canary Wharf and Central London

At our preschool near Canada Water and Canary Wharf, this week was filled with discovery, creativity, cultural celebrations, and environmental awareness! Our curious preschoolers engaged in a variety of exciting activities that supported their development in communication, STEAM learning, outdoor exploration, and cultural understanding.

Modern Languages and Communication: Rhymes with William Shakespeare

To celebrate William Shakespeare Day (April 23rd), our preschoolers embarked on a fun and theatrical journey through rhymes and rhythm. We introduced facts about Shakespeare’s life and work, with a special focus on the famous spooky lines from Macbeth:

"Double, double toil and trouble,
Fire burn and caldron bubble."

Children dressed up as witches and recited the poem, mixing ingredients into their own "magical brews."

This playful activity developed speech confidence, rhythm and beat awareness, and nurtured an early appreciation for English literature—hallmarks of our commitment to language development at our Canada Water nursery.

Regional Education: Ancient Greek Pottery Exploration

Our regional education focus transported the children to the ancient world of Greece. They explored Greek pottery, learning about the patterns, textures, and shapes of ancient vases and amphoras. Using textured paints, children created “aged” effects and carved beautiful designs inspired by original artefacts.

In addition to crafting their own amphoras, our preschoolers collaborated to build a large communal mural pot, promoting teamwork, pattern recognition, and a sense of shared achievement—a key part of the collaborative environment at our nursery in Canary Wharf.

Excursions and Festival Celebrations: Earth Day Adventures in Canary Wharf

For Earth Day, our preschoolers reflected on how they can become superheroes for our planet. From pledging to walk to nursery to discussing recycling and saving energy, the children showed thoughtful care for the environment.

In true adventure spirit, we took a boat trip to Canary Wharf, exploring the Eden Dock—a vibrant new green space project inspired by the Eden Project. The children marveled at how wildlife and plants were creatively integrated into the busy urban landscape.

Highlights of the trip included:

  • Visiting the impressive Whale on the Wharf sculpture made from recycled ocean plastics, inspiring important conversations about sustainability.
  • Walking among the tall glass buildings and across bridges and docks.
  • Playing at the "physicists playground" by the water and enjoying a lively round of mini golf!

Experiences like these connect real-world environmental learning with everyday actions—an important part of our outdoor education programme in Central London.

STEAM Learning: Restoring Ancient Landmarks

Our preschoolers’ STEAM learning continued with an exploration of ancient Greek landmarks. We compared how famous structures like the Parthenon looked when newly built and how they have changed over time due to natural degradation.

Children used various materials and construction tools to "restore" the Parthenon, practicing problem-solving, design thinking, and early engineering skills. These hands-on activities fostered creativity, critical thinking, and an understanding of architectural evolution—key pillars of our STEAM curriculum at Canada Water.

Specialist Curriculum

Musical Memory and Humming with Lucy Sparkles and Friends

Music is a vital part of our early years education in Westminster, and this week, the children were delighted to take part in a joyful session with Lucy Sparkles and Friends. The focus of the lesson was on humming—a simple yet powerful technique that supports musical memory development.

Through humming, the children learned to recognise melodies, retain musical patterns, and enhance auditory memory, all of which are fundamental for more advanced musical skills later on. Much like how exposure to a rich variety of words helps young children become strong readers and speakers, frequent exposure to a wide range of songs builds the foundation for future musical fluency.

By filling their minds with a diverse musical repertoire from an early age, we are helping our preschoolers at our nursery near Victoria and Belgravia to develop listening skills, rhythmic awareness, and a lifelong appreciation for music.

Lucy Sparkles' engaging and joyful teaching style encourages children to participate with confidence, blending movement, voice, and imagination to make learning musical concepts completely natural—and incredibly fun!

At our Westminster preschool, we view music not just as entertainment, but as a key part of cognitive, social, and emotional development, fostering creativity, memory, and expressive communication.
