Theme of the Week: Exploring Language, Light, and Culture
This week in the Baby Dragons room, our little learners explored the beauty of language, light, and culture through stories, songs, and sensory play. From signing and singing to celebrating Diwali and discovering the wonders of North America, it’s been a week full of joyful learning, laughter, and creativity.
The babies had a wonderful time exploring new sounds, words, and actions. Our Makaton signs of the week were “up” and “down”, which the children enjoyed using during play and singing sessions.
We sang “Up, Up, Up, Down, Down / 上上上,下下下 (Shàng shàng shàng, xià xià xià)”, which quickly became a favourite as the babies joined in with cheerful actions.
Our story of the week, “Who is Hiding at Halloween?” by Alex Scheffler, brought smiles and giggles as the children lifted flaps to find hidden characters.
In Mandarin, we continued learning pumpkin (南瓜 nán guā) and leaves (叶子 yè zi) — the babies listened carefully and tried to copy the sounds.
This week, we celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights! The babies dressed up in colourful clothes, made sparkly diyas, and decorated beautiful rangoli patterns. We filled the room with light and laughter, dancing to Diwali music and enjoying the bright, joyful atmosphere. It was a truly special celebration of colour, music, and togetherness.
For our regional learning theme, we explored the wonders of North America through sensory play. The babies discovered the “ocean breeze” and “Arctic chill” in our themed tuff tray, feeling the different textures of sand, snow, and water.
In our mini cooking class, we made a Maple Yogurt Swirl using yogurt and banana puree — a delicious and healthy activity that helped our little chefs practise stirring and mixing while learning about North American foods.
Our little explorers had a delightful trip to Penguin Park! From the merry-go-round to the climbing frames and slides, the children had endless fun. The highlight of the trip was discovering that the penguin in the park was actually a rubbish bin! The babies laughed as they fed it leaves, becoming tidy little helpers. It was a day filled with giggles, teamwork, and happy memories.
A big thank you to all our parents for your continued support and encouragement. Each week, your little ones bring so much joy and curiosity to our nursery
What a wonderful week it has been for our Blue Dragons! The children have been busy exploring new ideas, developing key skills, and sharing joyful experiences together. From creative mark-making and cultural celebrations to outdoor adventures and cooking fun, every activity encouraged curiosity, confidence, and collaboration.
Thinking about how we bring global culture and sensory-rich learning to life for toddlers?
In our literacy and mark-making area, the children enjoyed a beautiful flower-themed tracing activity inspired by our Festival of the Week. They traced delicate flower patterns with pencils and crayons, then used brushes and water to “rub out” their drawings—watching in delight as the lines disappeared like magic!
This playful and creative task strengthened their fine motor control and pencil grip while sparking discussions about textures, transformation, and how water can change what we see.
The highlight of our week was a joyful outing to Penguin Park! The children were full of excitement as they climbed, balanced, and swung on the playground equipment, challenging themselves to try something new.
Outdoor play helps children build strength, coordination, and confidence, while learning about teamwork, turn-taking, and friendship. We even talked about the penguin sculptures in the park and where penguins live, linking our experience to our learning about animals and habitats. It was a morning full of laughter, teamwork, and discovery!
We celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Light, with creativity, colour, and joy. The children learned that Diwali is celebrated by many families around the world and made their own diya lamps, decorating them with bright colours and glitter to represent the lights that fill homes during the festival.
One of our practitioners shared a lovely Diwali song and wore a beautiful sari, giving the children a glimpse into the vibrant traditions of this special occasion. Through stories, music, and art, the children learned about kindness, light, and togetherness — values we embrace in our classroom every day.
As part of our global learning theme, our little chefs explored North America by making delicious American pancakes! The children measured flour, milk, and eggs, learning how each ingredient helps make the batter fluffy and delicious.
Cooking together encouraged counting, measuring, and following instructions — all while building teamwork, confidence, and independence. Of course, the best part was tasting the pancakes, with smiles and sticky fingers all around!
This week in Makaton, we revisited familiar signs such as hello, please, and thank you, before learning a new one — together. The children loved practising the sign during group time, holding hands and using it to express teamwork and friendship. It was a beautiful reminder that we learn and grow best when we’re “together.”
A warm thank you to all our families for your continued support and enthusiasm. Each week, your children bring so much joy and curiosity into our classroom
This week in Dragon Flights, our preschoolers immersed themselves in a vibrant mix of art, music, language, and cultural exploration. From spooky Halloween crafts and colourful Diwali creations to celebrating Black History Month and learning new Mandarin words, it has been a joyful week filled with creativity, curiosity, and global learning.
Curious about how we combine culture, confidence, and creativity in the early years?
Our little dragons embraced the Halloween spirit with hands-on, spooky-themed crafts! Together, we made stick monsters, skeleton paper chains, and other festive decorations to fill our classroom with excitement.
These art activities encouraged creativity, shape recognition, and fine motor development while allowing children to express their imagination. The room now looks wonderfully spooky and ready for Halloween fun!
To celebrate Diwali, the children participated in a special pottery session where they made and decorated their own diya lamps. Using clay, glitter, and bright paints, they learned about Diwali’s message of light, joy, and togetherness.
The activity supported sensory exploration and fine motor skills while helping children appreciate different cultural traditions celebrated around the world.
Black History Month – Celebrating Louis Armstrong
As part of Black History Month, we introduced the children to the legendary jazz musician Louis Armstrong. We listened to his classic song “What a Wonderful World” and talked about how music can express emotion and bring people together.
The children enjoyed moving to the rhythm, clapping along, and reflecting on the idea that our world is indeed a wonderful and diverse place!
In Mandarin, we continued our seasonal learning by exploring autumn-themed words such as 秋天 (qiūtiān – autumn), 树叶 (shùyè – leaves), 松鼠 (sōngshǔ – squirrel), and 狐狸 (húlí – fox).
Through songs, stories, and visual aids, the children practised pronunciation and connected new words to real-life experiences. These fun lessons help strengthen memory, language confidence, and appreciation for multilingual learning.
The children enjoyed an outdoor nature walk to explore the signs of autumn. They observed the colours of falling leaves, felt the cool breeze, and even spotted some snails on their path!
This calm and engaging experience helped the children connect with nature, develop observation skills, and spark curiosity about animals and the changing seasons.
We had a week full of special visitors and joyful moments! Our sports teacher led an energetic tug-of-war session where the children practised teamwork, balance, and perseverance.
We also celebrated two preschool birthdays with our lovely music teacher, Ella Sparkle, who brought music, dancing, and laughter to the party. It was the perfect ending to a week full of joy, creativity, and celebration
A heartfelt thank you to our Dragon Flights families for your continued encouragement and support. It’s been a magical week of learning, laughter, and light
