Theme of the Week: Autumn Celebrations and Cultural Discovery

This week in the Hatchlings Room was filled with festive fun, language learning, and sensory exploration! Our little learners discovered the beauty of autumn through hands-on play — from feeding a bunny and celebrating Diwali to creating Halloween monsters and exploring Black History Month through art. Each activity nurtured creativity, communication, and curiosity in a joyful and meaningful way.

Modern Languages

Our babies had a delightful experience feeding a bunny some fresh vegetables! As they carefully placed the veggies into the bunny’s mouth, they practiced fine motor coordination and learned new Mandarin words — shūcài (vegetables), tùzi (bunny), and zuǐba (mouth). This hands-on play was a gentle and engaging way to combine language learning with sensory exploration.

Regional Education

The Hatchlings continued their North American adventure with a Statue of Liberty colouring activity. They used crayons and markers to bring the famous landmark to life, strengthening their early mark-making skills and learning about one of the world’s most recognisable symbols.

Halloween Sensory Fun

Halloween excitement filled the room as our little ones enjoyed a week of spooky sensory play! They explored soft pom poms, orange and black paper, and went on a playful spider hunt. Through this, they learned new Mandarin words — chéng sè (orange), hēi sè (black), and zhī zhū (spider) — while building their colour recognition and motor skills.
Another highlight was our giant spider web tuff tray! The children pulled colourful pom poms from the web and discovered soft scarves underneath, strengthening their hand-eye coordination and enjoying a multi-sensory adventure.

International Festival

The Hatchlings lit up the nursery with colour and joy as they celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Using bright pom poms and sparkling tea lights, they created their own rangoli patterns, exploring textures and symmetry while learning about this beautiful cultural celebration. The room glowed with creativity, wonder, and happiness!

Black History Month

In honour of Black History Month, the Hatchlings learned about the inspiring story of Rosa Parks. Together, they painted a big, bright red bus, developing their fine motor skills and practicing Mandarin colour words for “red” and “bus.” It was a vibrant and expressive activity that encouraged teamwork, creativity, and early communication.

Monster Play Dough Creations

Our babies’ imaginations ran wild as they crafted their own Halloween monsters using purple and orange play dough! With googly eyes and fluffy sticks, they created funny, spooky creatures while learning Mandarin words for eyes (yǎn jīng), hands (shǒu), and feet (jiǎo). This playful activity strengthened sensory skills, imagination, and coordination.

Specialist Teacher

We ended the week on a high note with a joyful music session led by Miss Molly. The babies wore witch hats, sang along to Halloween songs, and joined in bubble and parachute play — giggling and dancing as the bubbles floated through the air. It was a magical moment of rhythm, laughter, and movement that perfectly wrapped up a fun-filled week!

Thank you to all our wonderful families for your continued support — we can’t wait for more adventures next week!

Regional Learning

Our young explorers travelled to North America to learn about the rich heritage and traditions of Indigenous peoples. Through stories, pictures, and group discussions, the children discovered the meaning behind traditional Native American headdresses, understanding that they symbolise bravery, leadership, and honour within a tribe.
To bring this lesson to life, the children designed their own feathered headpieces using colourful feathers, cardstock, and glue. While having fun with art and design, they also learned to appreciate the deep spiritual and cultural significance of these beautiful items. It was a creative and respectful journey into history, helping the children connect imagination with understanding.

Festival of the Week

The nursery sparkled with colour as we celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Lights! The children learned about this special celebration and its message of joy and togetherness. Using our tuff tray filled with sand, they created a stunning Rangoli pattern with colourful sand and natural materials.
This hands-on activity supported fine motor development and encouraged teamwork as the children worked together to form beautiful shapes and patterns. The bright colours and festive designs truly reflected the spirit of Diwali — creativity, light, and happiness shared with friends.

Specialist Teachers

Our Blue Dragons were bursting with energy during this week’s Sporty Minis session! They began with warm-up stretches and a quick run to get their bodies moving before diving into a lively cone colour game, where they had to find and touch cones matching the colour called out by the coach.
This activity strengthened listening skills, coordination, and quick reactions while keeping everyone active and smiling. The session ended with an exciting tug-of-war, encouraging teamwork, perseverance, and fun physical play. It was the perfect blend of learning through movement and collaboration!

The week ended on a musical high note with Miss Molly’s music class! The children put on their witch hats and sang along to the cheerful “Hello Song” while shaking maracas and dancing to the rhythm.
They welcomed the autumn season with songs about falling leaves, using colourful props to bring their movements to life. The highlight of the session was bubble time, as laughter filled the room while the children jumped, reached, and popped bubbles. To finish, Miss Molly guided them through a peaceful cool-down under twinkling star lights, leaving everyone calm and content after a morning of musical joy.

We can’t wait to share more adventures with you next week!

North America & Autumn Adventures

Our little explorers embarked on a colourful learning journey across North America and into the world of autumn! The children observed how leaves change colour and fall from trees, collecting and comparing different shapes, patterns, and textures during outdoor leaf hunts.
Connecting to Canada, the children created stunning maple leaf silhouettes using chalk — learning about the national flag and the meaning behind its iconic red leaf. Their bright red, orange, and yellow creations brought the beauty of autumn right into our classroom!
We also explored North American animals such as moose and bears, discussing how they prepare for the colder months. This encouraged conversations about habitats, hibernation, and how the seasons change across different parts of the world

International Festivals

To mark Diwali, the children learned about the story behind this beautiful festival and how families celebrate with lights, decorations, and sweets. We talked about the meaning of light overcoming darkness and the importance of kindness and togetherness.
As part of the celebration, the children created rangoli-inspired patterns and decorated their hands with henna-style designs using face paint and cotton buds. These creative experiences helped them appreciate cultural traditions while expressing their artistic side. It was a wonderful way to celebrate diversity and unity within our classroom community.

Letter Practice Fun

Literacy came alive this month through sensory exploration! Using trays filled with soft flour, the children practiced forming letters with their fingers, strengthening their fine motor skills while enjoying a playful, tactile experience.
We also sang alphabet songs and practiced letter sounds together. This mix of movement, music, and sensory play helped the children connect letters to language in a fun and engaging way — building their confidence and early literacy foundations.

Science & Nature Discoveries

This month brought one of the most magical science moments of all — releasing our butterflies! The children had been observing the transformation from caterpillars to butterflies, learning about each stage of the life cycle. Their excitement as the butterflies took flight was truly heartwarming, sparking discussions about caring for living things and protecting nature.
In our gardening project, the children continued caring for their chamomile plant, taking turns watering it and observing new shoots and buds. This ongoing activity has taught patience, responsibility, and respect for the natural world — lessons that grow right alongside our plants.

Specialist Teacher Sessions

Miss Molly’s yoga sessions have been a calming highlight of our week! The children practiced gentle stretches and breathing techniques, learning how to use deep breaths when they feel big emotions. Through stories, movement, and mindfulness, they explored how to recognise and manage their feelings — building emotional awareness and inner calm.

In Sporty Minis, the children brought their energy and teamwork to exciting games that built coordination, confidence, and communication. They learned to cheer for one another, take turns, and celebrate each small success as a team. These sessions continue to help the children develop physical skills while fostering perseverance, kindness, and joyful movement.

Thank you to our wonderful families for your continued support — we can’t wait to see what adventures await in November!
